No Power, No Air and 100 Degrees

So when we got home on Thursday we found that only a portion of our outlets and appliances were working. We tried the breakers but they all seemed fine. We had Alliant Energy come out and take a look and they found that one of the cables from the main box to our house was bad. Needless to say we wanted it fixed, since the heat index was over 100.

Here is what the cable looked like when they first found it, the white part is where the corrosion was.

He pulled on it a bit and the cable broke right in half. Tim helped him with the digging to try to reduce the amount of time it took since it was so hot (and expensive). While they worked on this I tried to get the kids to bed, but it was so hot in the house we were all miserable. It was still cooler in the house than it was outside but the air was not moving at all. I tried cold washclothes on their foreheads, cold showers and icepacks before they finally fell asleep (at 11:00pm). The power finally came back on around 11:20 and believe me I was never so happy to hear the air kick back on.
